Leonard (Lenny) Paul Hellenthal, lived an enviable 100 years, passing away peacefully on December 14, 2018. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ethel Galper Hellenthal, children Dr. Ronald Hellenthal (Barbara), Carol Roberts (Larry), Laura Segura (Sal), grandchildren Karen Barnash (John), Michele Brentano (Matt), Tracy Roberts and 4 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Robert, Norah and Nolan.
Lenny served four years as Chief Warrant Officer in the Army during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1945. He shared 74 wonderful years with his wife, Ethel, raising their family, growing his own business (Telesco, Inc.), camping, and volunteering in the community. With Ethel always by his side, they volunteered for nearly 30 years at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Panorama City, participated in the North Hills Neighborhood Watch by attending meetings and spray-painting graffiti off walls in their neighborhood and working many election nights in their precinct. They both cared very much about giving back to their community.
He loved camping with his family and in retirement, joined the Del Air Rock Club where he enjoyed rockhounding and making jewelry and clocks that his family and friends will always treasure.
It’s hard to sum up a life in a few short paragraphs. Father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a loving, devoted husband who lived a good life, right up to the end. So many condolences have said that the marriage he shared with his wife was so enviable, so rare, the bar so high – that it was the gold standard of all marriages. He was the rock of the family; the disciplinarian, the man at the head of the table. His praise was hard to get, but when attained, you knew you had a job well done. He mellowed in his older years, sweetened by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they adored him. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Vocational Visions (vocationalvisions.org) where his granddaughter, Tracy, spends her days: 26041 Pala, Mission Viejo, CA 92691, or the National Teen Leadership Program, PO Box 6278, Folsom, CA 95763 (ntlp.org), founded by his daughter, Laura, providing guidance and leadership training to teens. Services are pending. Please contact the family for more information.
