
Priscilla-Joy Everts, known affectionately as P.J., passed away on Saturday, January 1st from complications following a coronary. She was 92. Daughter of the late Joy McCauley Everts, P.J. was raised in Westwood from the age of 12 and resided in the same house from 1930 until 1997. She then moved to Marguerite Gardens, a residential facility operated by the P.E.O. in Alhambra.
P.J. attended Beverly Hills High School, Mills College, and received a B.A. in History from UCLA in 1940. She then completed coursework at the Wright MacMahon Secretarial School in Beverly Hills that later proved to be the basis for her long career as executive secretary in a number of exciting positions.
During World War II, P.J. served with the American Red Cross in Europe driving a two-ton truck serving coffee and donuts to front line troops. Following the War, she brought a jeep back from Europe to use in the United States and spent five years as the executive secretary to Lynn T. White, jr, President, Mills College; five years as staff member and social secretary to Richard M. Nixon, Vice-President of the United States; and, executive secretary positions for 15 years with the Northrop Corporation in Los Angeles. Her last position at Northrop was as the Coordinator of Civic Affairs.
Her civic contributions were varied: she served 5 years on the Board of Trustees of the Westwood United Methodist Church; Member of P.E.O. Chapter NL; Board of Trustees of Spire Foundation; 10 years on the Board of Directors Committee of Professional Women for the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and as a member of the Women’s Division of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. She was active in the Mills College Alumnae Association and the Los Angeles Alumnae of Kappa Alpha Theta.
P.J. enjoyed travel and time with friends. She led a life of personal integrity, always maintaining a spirit of love, loyalty, laughter, and playfulness. She will be sorely missed. She is survived by her honorary family Mary, Thomas, Tom, Chloe, and Caitlin Pilla, and Catherine White, as well as her P.E.O. and Theta sisters. Donations may be sent to The Priscilla Joy Everts and Joy McCauley Everts Memorial Scholarship Fund at Mills College. A memorial service is pending.
