Sylvia Schlosser of Santa Monica, CA passed away on Monday, May 31st, 2022 at the age of 97. She was born on July 10, 1924 in Montreal, Canada where she grew up with her brother, Arnold Tepner, and many cousins.
She graduated from McGill University in Montreal and then earned her Masters in Social Work from Columbia University in New York.
Sylvia was ahead of her time– she moved to New York on her own and had a career as a social worker in a hospital before marrying and becoming a mother, at a time when most women were expected to marry right out of college. Once she had children, she continued to work part-time as a therapist with a private practice in San Francisco and Marin.
When she was younger she enjoyed skiing, swimming, tending to her succulent garden, playing Scrabble, and volunteering at the Battered Women’s Shelter in San Rafael. She enjoyed cultural events like the symphony and the ballet. Later in life she loved to read, sing to her grandchildren, play Bingo at Ocean Villa and win candy, and above all, spend time with her beloved caregivers Jean and Merly.
She is preceded in death by her former husband, Len Schlosser, of Mill Valley, CA.
She is survived by her daughters Lisa Thorne of Oakland, CA, and Nina Quaranta and son-in-law Mitchell Quaranta of Los Angeles, CA; and grandchildren Ali and Juliette Quaranta, and Jena and Casey Thorne.
Sylvia was an incredibly kind, loving, and funny woman.
The family would like to thank her loving and devoted caregivers, Jean Reyes and Merly Dominguez, for the care and compassion they showed her in her final days.
A private family memorial service will be held on Friday, July 22nd at 1pm at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary 1218 Glendon Avenue, Los Angeles.
