Charles Colin MacKinnon, age 72, of Morro Bay, California, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026.
Born with a curious mind and generous spirit, Charles lived with kindness, integrity, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. The landscapes of California's Central Coast were more than the place he called home; they were part of who he was.
A longtime Morro Bay resident, Charles found peace and happiness outdoors. He loved towering trees, winding rivers, majestic mountains, and the rugged coastline. Whether camping beneath the stars, exploring the countryside, or sitting quietly surrounded by nature, he felt most at home on the land. He treasured the beauty of simple moments and the freedom of open spaces.
That connection extended into his work. Charles was a groundskeeper at historic Hearst Castle, helping care for its beautiful grounds. He also oversaw campgrounds, taking pride in maintaining their natural beauty for others to enjoy. Caring for the land reflected his respect for nature and his wish to preserve it for future generations.
Charles loved traveling, discovering new places and appreciating the landscapes along the way. He enjoyed photography, capturing scenes and moments that caught his eye. He also had a special affection for animals, finding joy in their company and in the wildlife around him. His curiosity and appreciation for the world were evident in all these interests.
Music was another great love. Charles enjoyed playing his guitar, finding joy and personal expression in its melodies. Like the outdoors, music offered him peace and a way to savor life's quieter moments. His guitar will remain a cherished part of how family and friends remember him.
Charles was known for his warm smile, steady presence, and willingness to lend a helping hand. A loyal friend and patient mentor, he offered quiet wisdom and kindness to those fortunate enough to know him. Whether sharing stories, offering guidance, or simply listening, he made others feel welcome and appreciated.
Charles is lovingly survived by his sister, Monica Morse; his nieces and nephews; his great-nieces and great-nephews; and his great-great-nieces and great-great-nephew.
He was preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Deci Jennine Worland; his mother, Monica Myrna Moeller; and his sister, Kathleen Sears. May they be reunited in eternal peace.
A celebration of Charles's life will be held at a later date on the Central Coast, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness in his honor.
Though deeply missed, Charles's legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the natural beauty he helped preserve.
May he rest in peace, surrounded in memory by trees, rivers, mountains, the beautiful coastline, and the gentle melodies that made his spirit feel at home.
