Edward Fredrick Mutz

Edward “Ed” Mutz, 94, of Camarillo, CA passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2026 in San Luis Obispo. There, he had spent his last 20 months living comfortably in Assisted Living. Prior to relocating to San Luis Obispo, Ed and his wife Mary had resided in Camarillo from 1961 until Mary’s passing in December 2024. In those six decades together in Camarillo, Ed and Mary created a park-like residence that transformed their home into the hub of gatherings and celebrations, becoming physical extension of their love of family and welcoming of friends

Ed was born on December 23, 1931 in Bakersfield, CA. He was the youngest of five children born to Walter Frank Mutz and Frieda Alma (Weichelt) Mutz. He attended East Bakersfield High School, competing in springboard diving and on the “Daggers” basketball team.

While studying Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Ed met Mary Marts at a Newman Club dance at the Mission in San Luis Obispo. In June 1954, the day after he graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Ed married Mary, the love of his life. Together, they spent the next year touring the United States while Ed worked for the General Electric Company on rotational assignments.

Ed resigned at General Electric to work at Port Hueneme Naval Base in Oxnard, CA in a civilian facilities design and development capacity. He later transferred to the Range Development group at Point Mugu, Pacific Missile Test Center, where he spent the next 30 years managing projects, budgets, and organizations. He volunteered as President of the Federal Manager’s Association for a number of years and earned an MBA degree from Pepperdine University before his departure from work life.

Post-career, Ed and Mary stayed active with bowling leagues, dancing with Rambling Square Dance group, joining the Camarillo Moose Lodge, touring the U.S.A. in a number of progressively larger motorhomes, and enjoying over two dozen ocean cruises with good friends. Along with those activities, Ed always found time to bird hunt and fish with his good buddies.

Ed was proceeded in death by his parents, Walter and Frieda, sisters Rita, Genevieve (Vance), Clara (Cullen), brother Walter, beloved wife of 70 years Mary, and oldest son Steven.

He is survived by son Gary Mutz of Longmont, CO and his family: wife Linda, their son Keith and wife Kalene, their daughter Corrie, husband John Heap, and granddaughters Kassidy and Hannah.

Ed is also survived by his daughter Lisa McKinley of Arroyo Grande, CA and her family: husband Kelly, their daughter Rebecca, and son Ryan.

What he had in love, friendship, and treasure he shared with anyone he met. These traits he learned from his father and then graciously passed down to his children through living example.

When: Friday, October 2, 2026, Chapel service begins at 11:00am, Graveside at 12:30pm.
