Jerry Leigh McKinnon

Jerry McKinnon of Cambria, also known as the Gringo, passed comfortably with his daughter by his side. His beloved family was there in spirit. Jerry was born in Hudson Iowa February 26, 2029 to Leigh and Winnie McKinnon. The family moved to the Los Angeles area and settled in Huntington Park. During WWII he rode his bike as a messenger during the black outs. He served in the Navy during the Korean War on the destroyer the De Haven and was part of the ”7 Sitting Ducks” Naval campaign. He joined the Coast Guard Reserves and served for 24 years before retiring. He was a true patriot and dearly loved his country.

Jerry worked as a draftsman and designed several manufacturing buildings in Los Angeles before teaching high school English for 26 years at Norwalk High in Norwalk, CA He moved to Cambria in 1978. When arriving to town he opened a Mexican restaurant, Cocina de Gringo and was well known for his tostadas and chili rellenos. He worked for the CCSD as maintenance for the Vet’s Hall and was very involved in the establishment of the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse Lens. He loved Cambria.

Jerry was an active member of the American Legion Post 432 in Cambria for 49 years and served as Commander more than once. He was active in the Lions Club, the Odd Fellows, and the Masons. Overall, he was an active member in the Cambria community and many of its associations, Pewter Playhouse, and also served as Honorary Mayor.

Jerry Gringo is survived by his son Michael McKinnon (Lisa), grandchildren Sara McKinnon, Marcus McKinnon, Brittany Medina, great-grandchildren Kyla Quinn, Logan Hamilton, and Elijah Medina. He is also survived by his daughter Kathleen McKinnon (Ted Ashlock) and granddaughter Shannon McKinnon. He was loved by his family who will miss him terribly, but know he is reunited with his Savior Jesus Christ, wife Liz McKinnon and family that have gone before.
