Dr. Larry S. Hirsch, 68, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on April 22, 2018, at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo. Born July 1949 to Robert and Ruth Hirsch in Los Angeles, Larry was the second born of four boys. He spent his growing up years in Whittier, CA. He completed his undergraduate degree at UC Santa Barbara and then went to Virginia for his master's degree at The College of William and Mary. Larry completed medical school at the Medical College of Virginia where he also did his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He and Theresa Cullen started his private medical practice in September 1987. Larry and Theresa married in 1991 and raised 3 children together. Larry was a beloved and respected OB/GYN physician in SLO County since 1986. He loved his life as a doctor, especially the challenges of complicated cases and the ever-changing aspects of medicine. Over the span of his career it is estimated that he delivered over 8,000 babies. Larry and his family rarely went anywhere in SLO County without being approached by someone who had a birthing experience with him. Alongside his private practice, Dr. Hirsch was Medical Director of EOC Family Planning for 13 years and he has worked with Community Health Centers (CHC) for 19 years. Most recently, he was employed by OB Hospitalist Group at Sierra Vista Hospital and CHC, while also continuing on with his private practice in Atascadero. Larry had a strong faith in God and the Torah. He was an engaged learner, enjoying a good debate about the meaning of Bible passages and taking it upon himself to share his insight with others. Larry was a founding member of Congregation Ohr Tzafon in Atascadero. His many interests included: all sports and foods, wine, cooking, chess, golf, driving anywhere and chocolate. Larry was a BSA scoutmaster and a member of Order of the Arrow. He traveled the world, but enjoyed his home in Atascadero most, working on any project that presented itself, from building a deck to planting in the garden. He will be greatly missed, gone much too early. Larry is survived by his mother, Ruth Hirsch; brothers: Dean, Rob and Brian; his wife, Theresa and their three children: Micah, Brandon and Hazel. He is predeceased by his father, Robert Hirsch. A family friendly Celebration of Life will be held for Dr. Hirsch from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the home of Danny and Susie Lickness, 84 Arroyo Lane, SLO. Donations in Larry's memory can be made to: Congregation Ohr Tzafon, Atascadero or a charity of your choice.
