

Leo Ronald Mayer Born on August 6, 1926 in St. Louis, MO, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2016 in Santa Maria, CA. Preceded in death by Gloria Mayer (spouse of 56 years); Alvin Mayer (brother), Sandra Mayer (sister-in-law); Al Mayer (father), Joanna Mayer (mother), Gertrude Gilbertt (mother-in-law) and Frank Gilbertt (father-in-law) Survived by Patti Stewart (daughter) and Larry Stewart (son-in-law) from Santa Maria, CA; Joseph Mayer (brother) and Sandy Mayer (sister-in-law) from Kansas City, KS; Richard Mayer (brother) from Chicago, IL, Muriel Mayer (sister-in-law) from Fairview Heights, IL. Leo was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and former member of the Cardinals’ famous Knothole Gang. He also was a former St. Louis Browns fan and loved all sports. Leo’s military career included serving as a US Navy Seaman 2nd Class from 1944-1946 during WWII and working for the US Army as a civilian inventory management specialist . He also worked with the Air Force as a Civilian as Base Training Officer at both Maxwell AFB, AL and Scott AFB, IL, and also worked as an Education Officer during his time at Scott AFB. Leo attended St. Louis University, graduated from Harris Teachers College and received his Masters in Education from Washington University in St. Louis. Following graduation, Leo worked as a grade school teacher for 16 years. Leo was known for his upbeat personality, his incredible sense of humor and witty puns, and his resounding deep voice, which landed him some commercials (most notably, Maxwell Coffee), and a radio announcing job while living in Las Vegas, NV. He also loved to sing and recently had discovered a new love for karaoke.
