Toshie Meehan passed away peacefully at her home in Los Osos on December 14, 2020. She was 95 years old and had lived a full life in Japan and the United States. Born into an affluent family in Kyoto, Japan on October 14, 1925, she lived in several Asian countries because of the locations of her family’s silk farms prior to World War II. Kyoto was the central home of the Sakamoto family where their silk production business originated, and the family had a long history in that ancient cultural city – a jewel of Japan.
She moved to Tokyo during the US Occupation under General McArthur and worked as a bookkeeper at a US Army Post Exchange. Her main interest was enjoying the cabaret nightlife with her Japanese friends. Her future husband, Bernard J. Meehan, Jr. was a military policeman stationed in Tokyo when they met. They were married on October 8, 1955, in Beppu, on the island of Kyushu, Japan.
The couple’s three children were born in Okinawa, Japan while her husband served in the US Special Forces there. They were transferred to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina in 1960 where she applied for her US Citizenship. The day she was naturalized as a US citizen in Raleigh, North Carolina was a proud moment.
As an Army wife, she worked on many committees including the Red Cross. Toshie enjoyed bowling while her children attended grade school, cooking (especially Japanese dishes such as sushi), golfing, and best of all playing Bingo with her many friends on the Chumash bingo bus. She was also very proud of her home and Japanese rock garden.
She is preceded in death by her beloved and faithful husband, Bernard, her parents, and her siblings in Japan. She is survived by her eldest daughter, Frances Patricia Meehan; her son, Kevin Patrick Meehan; her youngest child, Linda Marie Feil (nee Meehan); and her granddaughter, Alysson Feil.
Her cremated ashes will be buried at the gravesite of her husband at the Los Osos Memorial Park on their wedding anniversary.
A Catholic burial service will take place on October 8, 2021, at 1 p.m. The location is 2260 Los Osos Valley Road in Los Osos, California.
