William Roger Crater Sr.

William Roger Crater Sr. was born in 1924 at home on Old Vest Mill Rd. in Winston Salem, N.C. to a Moravian family. He had 6 siblings. 1943 he finished school and enlisted in the Navy. He was initially sent to Guam. During his time of service at Point Mugo, he met and later married Eileen Ann Welcker. They met at a USO dance in Hollywood Ca. They went back to North Carolina to live and later returned to the Los Angeles area to raise their family. Roger was employed by the engineering firm, CF Braun and Co. for 40 years. He was shop foreman and later became the senior engineering scheduler. They built oil refineries and later nuclear steam generators. After his retirement in 1985 they settled into rotating every 6 months to Anderson, South Carolina and back to Santa Monica, California. He loved golfing and was ecstatic when he got a hole in one and it was recorded in the Anderson newspaper. Roger was very family oriented and loved to spend time camping and boating with family and friends. He was a kind and generous man and always tried to do his best at everything he put his hand to. Roger was very smart and a hard worker and accomplished a lot in his 93 years. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Crater Marton and her partner Bob Otten. Son, William Roger Crater Jr and wife, Jackie. His grandchildren are Jennifer Crater Sloan and husband Dominic, and Dana Crater. All are from Canada. His grandson, Thomas Marton deceased, and surviving wife Katherine in Santa Barbara. Great grandchildren are, Arianna and Riley Sloan (Canada) and Garrett and Sadie Marton (Santa Barbara Ca.). He is also survived by his youngest sister Betty Wise of Winston Salem, N.C. Roger will be interned at Los Osos Memorial Park in Los Osos, Ca. with his deceased wife, Eileen Ann. Los Osos is close to Baywood Park where the family spent many years at Uncle Jack’s cabin every three day week-end. He enjoyed surf fishing and catching enough fish for a cookout that night. They also loved to go 4 wheeling on the dunes in Morro Bay. They all enjoyed exploring the natural springs encircled by the beautiful and fragrant eucalyptus trees. Roger was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed. He will be in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation
