Allan Barclay Brown

Allan Barclay Brown, age 88 of LaGrange and Gilbertsville, Kentucky, died at his residence at The Springs at Oldham in LaGrange, Kentucky on July 30, 2026.

He was the son of the late Allan Hughes Brown and Mary Pryor Taylor Brown. His wife Linda Ann Nason Brown predeceased him after 55 years of marriage on April 22, 2010. His youngest son, David Pryor Brown, also predeceased him on April 18, 2008.

Allan was affectionately known to his family and friends as “Barc.” To his 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren he was known as “Papaw.”

Barc was born at 12:00 PM on April 22, 1938, in a small apartment above a grocery store on Main St. in LaGrange, Kentucky. He grew up in LaGrange, Springfield, Bloomfield and Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Fern Creek High School in Louisville in a class of 129 students on May 21, 1956. His graduating class was charged in the keynote address to “Decide on a goal and stick to it.” The keynote speaker went on to furnish the class with the following salient advice:

Don’t be contented to be average, because when you’re average, you’re just as close to the bottom as to the top. You must decide what you’re going to do in life and then determine to do it. And keep that goal you have set uppermost in your mind.

Barc most assuredly incarnated this advice in his mind, heart, and, most significantly, through his will for the rest of his life. For shortly thereafter he began a long and distinguished career in his work for South Central Bell. While working for South Central Bell, Barc completed college level courses in electrical engineering which amounted to an associate level degree in today’s educational world.

In 1963, he purchased a farm outside the city limits of LaGrange on Jericho Rd., which he named “Maple Hill Farm.” There he raised registered Angus cattle. In 2002, the Great Meadows Angus Association honored him for outstanding achievement in herd level improvement with the Angus breed.

In his work for South Central Bell, he received numerous awards. Most notably, in 1974, he was awarded a commendation as the Supervising Service Foreman that enabled Louisville and LaGrange to reestablish telephone and communication service after an F4 tornado devastated many areas on April 3, 1974. In 1981, he received an award for the successful certification of the Crossbar Electromechanical Switching Control Center in Louisville.

Upon retirement, he and his wife Linda moved to Kentucky Lake in Gilbertsville, Kentucky, where he flourished profoundly in that ancient art of angling – especially for white and black crappie.

His greatest achievement, however, was in raising a family of five children who, in his mind, all reached the highest “rungs” on the ladder of their various vocations, most notably in raising families of deep Christian faith. He passed down to his children many character traits, which were all framed by taking responsibility for the things entrusted to them, stewarding the gifts Christ bestowed upon them, and striving to be always more than average.

Barc was predeceased by his second wife, Joyce Fay Coffman Brown of Benton, Kentucky on March 16, 2026. He and Joyce enjoyed 13 years of marriage sharing a love of many things, chief of which was love for the Kentucky Wildcats.

He is survived by one sister, Nancy Pryor Stivers of Buckner, Kentucky; two sons, Dr. Barclay Taylor Brown (Melissa) of Winchester, Kentucky and Allan Worth Brown (Ginger) of Plano, Texas; two daughters, Laura Lynn Rankin (Jeff) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Martha Ann Hamilton (Lee) of Prospect, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Additionally, he has one nephew, Matthew Duane Robison (Valerie) and one niece, Rebecca Lyn McDonald (Mark). Barc also had nieces – Karen Gentry, Barbara Appleby, Johanna Lynn Nason Thompson and nephew, Paul Roy Nason, as well as a living sister-in-law – Martha Dean Nason Padgett.

Funeral Arrangements are being handled by Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY, 40218.

The funeral service and visitation will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 9:30 AM. for family; 9:30-11:00 AM for the public; 11:00 AM for the service proper at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 4400 Bardstown Rd., Louisville, KY.
