

She was born in Louisville on August 22, 1909, the eldest of Melvin and Annie Headley's nine children. Alma was a founding member of the Farmdale Baptist Church of Louisville, and throughout her life continually returned home to her beloved Louisville. Alma and her husband, Bernard moved to Southern California in 1955, followed eventually by all three sons and their families. There, she was beloved grandmother, faithful churchgoer and church pianist. Alma loved pet dogs, anybody's child, growing roses and reading her Bible every day.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Penrose.
She is survived by her sons, Harold Penrose, David Penrose and Melvin Penrose; sister, Viola Watson; brother, James Headley; 13 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Alma was also a loving mother to 14 foster children.
A service honoring the life of Mrs. Penrose will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Farmdale Baptist Church, 1238 Durrett Lane, with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
