

Dr. Billy Ray Lewter, age 77, of West Palm Beach, Florida, passed away at home on Saturday, April 19, 2014. He is survived by his wife Mary J. Lewter, five children, Jonathan Lewter (Susan) of Louisville, Kentucky, Amy Drago (David) of Pensacola, Florida, Beth Lewter of West Palm Beach, Florida, Rachel Lewter, of Frankfort, Kentucky, and David Lewter, of West Palm Beach, Florida; and fourteen grandchildren, Sarah Drago Sessions, Joelle A. Nieves, Robert D. Lawhon III, Marki L. Nieves, Brendan Lawhon, Christopher Lewter, Brittany Lawhon, Kathryn Lewter, Alyssa Lawhon, Caitlyn Lawhon, Kristin Lewter, George Alves and Alixandra Lewter; his brother V. Gene Lewter (Judith) and Sandra Henning more sister than niece. He is predeceased by his siblings R.L. Lewter, Joyce E. Brock and Jerry W. Lewter and grandson David Drago, Jr.
Born August 17, 1936, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Robert Lee Lewter and Lena Pearl Hannah Lewter. When his Dad died young he dropped out of school to support his family by working at the Courier-Journal in Kentucky. A self-motivated, energetic and ambitious man, he went on to attend the University of Louisville (A.B.), Eastern Kentucky University (M.A.) and the University of Kentucky (PhD). An ordained minister he became a missionary to Hong Kong and the Philippines. He taught at Southeastern Christian College in Winchester, KY, Bryan College in Dayton, TN and spent 29 years at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, FL and never retired. Choosing instruction, applying his heart to understanding he went on to study at Oxford Aim, Dayton, TN (D.Litt) and obtained a degree in Naturopathy. By calling out to God and searching for wisdom he was gifted with longer life. A dedicated family man he has numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and a diverse community of friends. Though he only had five children, he was father to many. Full of gratitude he was a role model and inspiration leaving an everlasting footprint on the hearts of many. There will be a visitation on Sunday, April 27, 2014, from 1-3:30 pm at the Portland Avenue Church of Christ, 2500 Portland Ave., in Louisville, KY. Friends and family are invited to lunch at the church at 1:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at the church at 3:30 p.m. The interment will be held privately on April 28, 2014, at Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be offered to Portland Christian School for missions trips or Bryan College.
