Moose was a proud US Navy Veteran where he earned a National Defense Service Medal and a Meritorious Unit Commendation. He spent many years as a mortgage banker before taking a position as a marketing manager of a law firm. Once he retired, he committed his free time as a docent at the Chickamauga Battlefield in Georgia. He was passionate about civil war history and connecting with people to keep its lessons alive. Moose also gave generously of his time to the Tennessee Aquarium and those who knew him will remember a vibrant soul who found joy in life’s everyday moments.
At the heart of Moose’s life was a deep and enduring love for his wife, Wanda Poer. He spoke of her to his friends as the woman of his dreams and to all who knew them, their story was truly a fairytale. Theirs was a companionship of over 12 years built on laughter, mutual respect, and quiet acts of devotion. He had a gift of making others laugh and entertaining a crowd. He was known to say, “The bigger the crowd, the more the laughs!”. He was a devoted and beloved friend, especially to his 4 closest friends, Jim, Dick, Denny, and Jon, who were more like brothers. Moose made the world a little brighter and a lot more fun.
Those who preceded him in death are his parents, Fenton Poer and Mahala Pyatte Holbrook and two sisters, LaVon Murphy and Laura Wright.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Wanda Poer; his sons, Brad Poer (Nicki), Rusty Poer (Esther), and Jason Shaw (Carmen); his sister, Maxine Greene; grandchildren Amber Pearce (Christopher), Ashley Shaw, Taylor Shaw, Brandon Shaw, Cameron Sloan, Cayden Slone, Etta Poer, Brogan Poer, Lily Poer, and Ellie Poer; his friends who were more like family Jim Deloach (Suzan), Dick Linsert (Barbara), Denny Kirkpatrick (Brenda), and Jon Dickerson (Elaine); as well as many other friends and family members.
