Carolyn Rose Kaelin Ludwig passed peacefully on December 2, 2017 at Westport Place Health Campus at the age of 91. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Fred C. Kaelin and Stephanie H. Troll. Carolyn was beloved wife of 70 years and childhood sweetheart of the late Kenneth J. Ludwig. They both grew up on Payne Street and graduated together from St. Francis of Rome. Carolyn was a devoted wife and mother of 6 children, and had 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Carolyn was a hard working, fun loving gal. She and Kenneth were avid golfers and enjoyed square dancing, bunko parties, fish fries and other Catholic Church activities. Carolyn was a wonderful scratch cook, making jams and preserves, homemade breads and pastries. She loved the outdoors: gardening, long walks, visiting state and local parks, and quietly observing nature at Bernheim. She was a talented seamstress, and made beautiful clothes for herself and her family. Carolyn had a unique style, from her classic bob and cat’s eye glasses to her vintage Besendorf oxfords.
Carolyn and Kenneth relocated throughout the southeast with the railroad. Their last move before retiring in Louisville was to Jacksonville, Florida. There, Carolyn attended college, studied business administration and worked full time in the office of a manufacturing plant. Her most rewarding job was as wife and mother, encouraging and developing her children, and adapting her parenting to the diverse needs and talents of each.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband Kenneth and son Kenneth (Marty) Ludwig; her sons-in-law John Cummins and Richard Coffey; her granddaughter Rachel Cummins; her brothers Milton, Paul and Norman Kaelin; and sisters Ann Bess, Doris Weis, Teoline Duncan, Ruth Schueler, Anita Gagel, Helen Showalter and Nora Rita Kaelin.
Carolyn is survived by her children Lynn Coffey, Anne Marie Hatton (David), Laura Cummins, Kurt Ludwig (Lila), Tracy Shaull (Steve) and numerous extended family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday December 5 from 4 to 6 pm, with memorial service immediately to follow, at Arch L. Heady and Son at Westport Village.
