
Cartis was born on February 14, 1926 in Sommerset Kentucky to William and Ada (Mounce) VanHook.
Cartis was a WWII and Korean War Navy veteran and retired from the Courier Journal
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3903, VFW #1339, and Sunset Masonic Lodge #915.
Cartis is preceded in death by his siblings, Carl, Arley, Charles, and Edmund VanHook; parents; and wives, Barbara, Willa Dean, Ruth, and Catherine.
Cartis is survived by his daughters, Vickie Edwards (Duke) and Susan Ferguson; sons, Louie Perkins (Norma), Mike Perkins (Jennie), and Fred Rhea (Delores); grandchildren, Dawn Montano, Missy Perkins, Mark Perkins, Kelli Perkins, Alyson Thompson, Bryan Perkins, Michelle, Tammy, Dennis, and John; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Dezarae, Donivon, Savanna, Hunter, Adam, Paige, Kody, Courtney, Jennifer, Alexis, Christina, Joshua, Bobby, Randall, Caleb, Josh, and Matthew; great-great-grandchild, Landon, Cole, and Kaden; siblings, Edward VanHook (Roxie), Imogene Hensley (Bob), Frank VanHook, James VanHook (Florence), Carlene Frye (Jerry), Jane Haynes, Sue Estep (Rick), and Lois Murray (Robert).
There will be a memorial visitation at the Eagles Lodge #3903, 3501 College Dr, Louisville, KY 40299, on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 3-6:30 followed by a service honoring the life of Cartis. Cremation was chosen.
