Charles William Crowe

Known to friends as “C.W” or “Charley”, and known to his family as “Billy”, C.W. was born in Hartford, Kentucky on April 21, 1927 to attorney Goebel G. Crowe and Louise Maddox Crowe. C.W.’s grandfather was Judge Charles Crowe, the County Judge of Ohio, County Kentucky.

C.W. moved to Louisville in 1939 with his mother eventually attending Male High School, playing junior and varsity football. He joined the Navy in 1944 and was stationed in New Orleans, Louisiana for his service, honorably discharging in June 1946.

After working as a lineman for Kansas City (Missouri) Power and Light Company for several years, he returned to Louisville and joined the Electrical union and also trained as a pyrometrician. He joined the Ft. Knox Army Depot and because of his technical skills, he was sent to work on X-ray equipment at government hospitals in military bases all over the U.S.

He was recruited by Naval Ordnance manufacturing plant in Louisville in the early 1970s as a motor electrician and eventually became line supervisor, running crews of mechanics who rebuilt motors for U.S. Navy battleship guns. His crews were in charge of repairs for the Phalanx missile system, a battleship-based automated weapon system used by the U.S. Navy to defend military vessels against incoming threats either by air or sea.

C.W. retired in 1990 after nearly 40 years of service to the U.S. government. He was extremely proud of his Navy years and of his continuing participation in our country’s defense as a civilian. He loved his country and his family, and lived a life of dedication to both. He was honest, dependable, a faithful Baptist, a hard worker who provided for his family and a generous giver to those in need. He truly exemplified the “greatest generation”.

C.W. lost his beloved wife, Clara, to illness in 2023 after nearly 48 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughter, Carollee; his cherished grandsons, Alex and Tyler, and several cousins in Louisville, Bowling Green and Indiana.

Visitation will be 12-4pm, Sunday, Sept 27, 2026 at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville KY 40218.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Sept 28 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel at Heady at Resthaven.
