Joe was born October 19, 1945 in Louisville to Mary “Peasie” & Amos Fischer. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s High School in Bowling Green, and went on to Bellarmine College then earned his Ph.D in clinical psychology from DePaul University. He dedicated his early years to mental health non profit work in Rockford & Chicago, Illinois working with youth in schools, hospitals and residential facilities. A true libertarian, he designed projects in the 70s in Chicago for men to raise conscientiousness around the need for vulnerability, honesty and growth. He spoke with gratitude about his former clients and their willingness to share their journey with him. He started his own private practice in Louisville in the 80s- a brilliantly successful practitioner who detested insurance companies and red tape.
Joe would step away from clinical work in the 90s to pursue dreams of raising money to help local Louisville non-profits. He deeply valued inclusion, acceptance, giving and receiving grace, kindness, and creating meaningful experiences. His greatest mission was to help others in discovering their unique gifts. He encouraged people to take risks and fail as he did many times himself, learning along the way. He demonstrated patience with himself and inspired others to practice self-love.
He is preceded in death by his loving mother Peasie Fischer, father Amos, ex-wife and friend Carolyn Fischer. He is survived by his daughter Kate Fischer (Steffany), son Paul Fischer (Rachel), grand daughters Zoë Yates and Josie Fischer, sister Maria Clements (Steve), nephews Alex & Wyatt Clements, long time friend Linda Cheatham, and dozens of wonderful cousins.
Visitation will be Wednesday June 12 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 760 Eastern Parkway from 9am-11am. A funeral mass will follow at 11am at the church. The family invites you to wear vibrant colors to honor and celebrate Joe’s life.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Coalition for the Homeless or Nazareth Home.
