

He was born July 5, 1941 in Eddyville, Kentucky, the son of the late RC and Ernestine (Davis) Gray.
Davis was a man of many talents, and achieved success in many career fields over the years, starting as an apprentice butcher in Kuttawa, KY in 1957, then going on to include pole climber, ditch digger, draftsman, Merchant Marine, surveyor, railroad switchman, oiler, aircraft crash investigator, and many more; retiring from GE as a Supervisor. He also entered in the U.S. Army starting in 19** and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4) (Ret). During his Army career he served as a helicopter pilot in multiple platforms, his favorite being the AH-64 Apache, and deploying to Bosnia in support of operation Joint Forge. He was also a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church and Joppa Masonic Lodge #167.
A man of many talents, and a wicked sense of humor, his interests included playing the piano, photography, carpentry, biking (later a Rambler All Terrain TerraTrike), fly fishing, hiking, to name just a few. Aside from his family, his greatest passion was flying helicopters.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy (Humphrey) Gray; daughter Maria Gray; sister Jenine Compton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dr. Ben and Margaret Humphrey; nephew and nieces Bill Compton (Melissa), Betty Woodward (Steve), Matthew Humphrey (Suzie), and Micah Humphrey (Kelly); and great nieces Callie Woodward and Theadora Humphrey.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM-3:30 PM on Monday, July 29, 2024 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 319 Browns Lane, Louisville, KY. Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:30 PM on Monday at the church.
