

She was born January 8, 1930. Together with her husband, L. Stuart Smith and other parents, she founded the Fund for Perceptually Handicapped Children in the early 1960’s. During the same time period, they joined other parents of learning disabled children and started the Alfred Binet School.
Cynthia was a native of Boston, attended Bennington College, and worked in the field of mental health at Kentucky Children’s Home, Childrens Treatment Services and Wellspring. She will be remembered for her kindness, irreverent humor and her commitment to social justice.
She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Stuart Smith, a Louisville architect and her son, Bruce S. Smith.
She is survived by her brother, David Coe; her daughter, Leslie Smith Townsend; her son-in-law, Loren Townsend; grandchildren, Nathan Townsend, Leslea Townsend Cronin, Chelsea Kendrick and Sarah Kendrick; great-grandchildren, August, Brady, Ivy, and Eliza; and also her extended family at The Wellspring Concord House.

The family wishes to express gratitude to those who cared for her at home, the nurses and staff of the Episcopal Church Home and Dr. Jane Cornett and Angie Ethridge.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Monday, March 5, 2012 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 330 North Hubbards Lane. Vistitation will be from 1:00 PM until the time of the service on Monday at the church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Arch L. Heady and Son at Westport Village.
