D.C. Hughes, 86, returned to his heavenly father peacefully on April 29th, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky in his home surrounded by loving family.
D.C. was born September 17th, 1939, in Boston Kentucky to Cecil M. and Mary Ethel (Casteel) Hughes. D.C. served his country as a US Marine for 4 years, which afforded him the opportunity to tour the South Pacific Islands. This infused his love for experiencing travel and venturing away from his home. Afterwards, he gained employment at Ford Kentucky Truck Plant where he retired after 30 years and was a member of the UAW. On the side, D.C. painted homes as his own boss with D.C. Painting Service.
A lover of outdoors, D.C. was an avid small game hunter, angler, trap shooter, and gardener known for his green thumb and the produce that he blessed people with. Excelling in both trap shooting and bowling, where he was very competitive, D.C enjoyed spending time with family and friends. And on quiet nights, you might find him playing board games with his children, or cards with friends, always exchanging his comical sense of humor. D.C. was also a lover of sports, rooting for teams like UK Wildcats, Detroit Lions, and, of course, the teams closest to home, the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals.
Married to Carolyn Jackson Hughes for 64 years, the demonstration of loyalty and togetherness was visible for all to see, including his children; Cathy Hughes, Laura Black (Perry), Marlena Bailey (Michael), in whom he was always instilling honesty and integrity. He taught everyone he met skills for life and morality.
D.C. was preceded in death by his parents; his only son, Darrell Hughes; and his infant daughter, Angela Hughes.
He is survived by his wife; daughters; his sister, Sue Hughes Massey (Jim); 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and multiple cousins. He will be greatly missed and his presence and wisdom are a tremendous loss.
A visitation will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home in Louisville, Kentucky on Monday May 4, 2026, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM and will resume the following day, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the same location from 10:00AM to 1:00PM. A funeral service will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home in Louisville, Kentucky on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, beginning at 1:00PM. He will be entombed at Evergreen Cemetery.
The Funeral Service will be officiated by Pastor James McFadden.
Pallbearers will be Perry Black, Michael Bailey, Bryan Coffey, Brandt Heemsoth, Jason Hall, Jude Markwell.
Honorary Pallbearers: Travis Black, and Victor Hughes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in D.C.'s name to the Disabled American Veteran's Organization, St. Jude, or Hosparus of Louisville
