A Tribute to our friendship
I could write/talk about my friend David Heuke for hours, but I wont. David and I met while hitchhiking to Flaget HS’s 9th grade. We lived near Churchill Downs. At age 14/15, we would walk in free for the last race, then bum a program from a departing patron, put up $1 each for a bet. We also had many part-time jobs there, and later we owned a horse (Joseph Brandt) with 2 other guys and won a race a race at Churchill Downs! Thinking we were great poker players we lost $$ to several Flaget students we invited to my house for a poker game. At age 15 --and without telling our parents—we tried to hitchhike to Florida. It ended at Atlanta, after 4 days.
On the way to a drive in movie, my long awaited first date with Cherill was ruined when she wouldn’t kiss me. David had told her that my family used regular soap for brushing our teeth (True!). David and I dressed up on Derby Eve and walked into party rooms at several hotels….for free food and beer. Between steady girlfriends, David announced he would join us hitting the dance halls. He would buy a 6 pack but we would end up drinking 3 or 4 of his beers. Dave introduced me to golf…and we played lots of it together. He introduced me to Rita Hartnett…who was very special. Later, I was in their wedding and he was in mine. His kids seem like my kids. David and I and Jim Price started a monthly poker club 40 years ago that stopped temporarily due to Covid. In the 20 years of our retirement, Dave and I—Along with Ron Knorpp and John Wafford—would meet on Mondays for coffee…and quarterly with our wives for dinner. David called me 4 days prior to his death…just to see if I was ok. David loved his family…and they loved him. He and I loved each other almost like that I think. I will miss him greatly. May he rest in peace.
