The Federal Highway Administration has lost a friend and a dedicated worker.  I had met Dave only a few times but respected him greatly.  I retired from FHWA in 2007.  My prayers go out to David's Family.

I was a classmate of David at Speed Scientific School in Civil Engineering. I learned about his passing only two days ago, and it was certainly a shock. Even though we went our separate ways (I moved to New Orleans) I have often thought of him. He impressed me as a person who really cared about others, and I have no doubt that he continued to do so. May God comfort his family and friends as they deal with this tragedy.

My heartfelt sympathy to Davids wife and parents.I went to school with David and in eighth grade we took ballroom dancing together at teen club. I thought the world of him.Only time will ease your grief. I am so sorry.

I'm so sorry to hear about David's death.I grew up next door to Davids aunts Dewey and Hattie.They were so proud of him.  I think of them all each time I go to Cape Sandy and see their house.  God bless you.

My wife Sharon and I were school mates of David at Southern High School. David even arranged a blind date for me back then. We were saddened to hear of David's passing and the circumstances surrounding his death. We pray that God's peace, comfort and strength will be with his family and others affected by this loss.

Like David, I am an engineer as well and got acquainted with David while he worked for the Public Works department in the Courthouse Annex several years ago.  He was a very conscientious person and took his job very responsible. I sorrow for your loss and regret his life was taken as it was. Many in our community share in your loss,

Vivian, I am so saddened at this senseless tradgey.  Dave was truly a special person and will not be forgotten!  We all loved to hear him laugh! I pray God's peace will comfort you in the days to come!

Mrs. Merritt, as one of the leaders of the "framing crew" at Habitat I worked closely with Dave. I always appreciated his efforts to get the tools and materials together in the mornings and his willingness to stay late to get a job done. Sometimes at lunch I would have to tell him to stop working and join us.  It was always interesting to hear the stories from his road building days. He had a distinctive laugh that we heard often and "the crew" had fun joking with him about his work gloves. This tragedy is a great loss for me personally and the "framing crew". My wife and I are praying for you.

Dear Merritt Family:  I never met David Merrit, nor did I know of him prior to his death. I write to you simply as a resident of Louisville. Vivan: Dave worked for me in the Denver Office and was both a coworker and friend. So sorry about the tragic death even in his continued desire to work for the better of all. We will remember him always and especially in our prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.  I went to school and graduated in the same class with David.  I can remember him in class when he had given a talk on an article about Viet Nam.  It was awesome.  He will be missed and it is an honor to say that I knew him when.

Dave was truly a special person and will be missed. He was a friendly, soft spoken quiet man who enjoyed volunteering at Habitat for Humanity. He had an "eye" for perfection and worked to finish all of the concrete "flat work" just so, often working through lunch or staying later and completing the task.
