Born on October 22, 1955, in Louisville, KY, Debbie was the cherished daughter of William and Dorothy Linnig. She graduated from Angela Merici High School in 1973 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration from Western Kentucky University.
Debbie enjoyed a joyful childhood, surrounded by her brother, sisters, and many cousins. She was a competitive roller-skater in her youth and treasured her lifelong friendship with Glenda Hornback. Her love for animals was unwavering—throughout her life, she rescued numerous cats and dogs, always opening her heart and home to those in need. She was especially proud to coordinate Mutts at Mike’s, a large-scale pet adoption event that helped hundreds of animals find loving homes.
A woman of deep compassion and civic spirit, Debbie was involved in various charitable efforts, including securing beds and mattresses for families in need. She played a pivotal role in the creation of the Louisville Firefighters Memorial at 301 S. 6th St., a lasting tribute to the bravery and service of local heroes. She also served as a trustee for River Fields, contributing to the preservation of the Ohio River’s natural beauty.
Professionally, Debbie dedicated much of her career to public service. She held key roles including Executive Director of the Kentucky OSHA Review Commission, Investigations Director at the Jefferson County PVA, and Spokesperson for the Jefferson County Circuit Clerk’s Office.
Debbie found the love of her life in Fred King, with whom she shared 28 years of marriage. Their bond was one of true devotion, and they were rarely seen apart. She was the heart and soul of her family, lovingly known as “NeNe” by her grandchildren. Her nurturing spirit, warm hugs, and constant support created a legacy of love that will live on in those who knew her best.
Debbie is survived by her devoted husband Fred King; her loving children, Sarah Ghazi Michals (Masoud) and Scott Michals (Kristin); and her adored grandchildren, Madeline, Connor, Millie, and Marty. She is also survived by her siblings: Nancy Wuerth (Bobby), Theresa Cissell (Lindsey), and William “Bill” Linnig (Mary); her aunt, Judy Sangster; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, William and Dorothy Linnig; her grandparents, Mike and Carrie Linnig and William and Anna May Sangster; and her nephew, Timothy James.
Debbie’s life was marked by compassion, dedication, and deep love for family and community. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
