What to say?

“I’m sorry” seems too little. “My condolences” seems too formal. But you want to say that magic something that makes it all better. Nothing fits. When I lost my sister, I felt a swirl of hurt and pain and grief and all that bad stuff that you just can’t cry out. Believe me, I tried. I keep thinking it’s not enough; it’s not enough. But it never is. You’ve just gotta go through it. And yet here I am, still looking for that magic something to say, when all I can think of to say is I am very, truly sorry for your loss. I know it’s not enough, but it’s all I’ve got.
