She was born August 2, 1940, in Shelby County, Kentucky, to the late Lister and Alma Richardson.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Laurence E. Barry III; a daughter, Debbi Ann Adkins, two grandsons, Sgt. Cory Allen Adkins and Keegan Atley Adkins. A sister, Thelma Button and brother, Kenneth Richardson and her mother-in-law, Margaret Bruno.
She enjoyed reading and would immerse herself in a book until the final written word was read. Her puzzle solving skills and patience were envied and the more pieces and challenges the better as far as she was concerned.
Dorothy or Dottie as coworkers would often call her, spent many years as a sales associate in many of Louisville’s stores in the 1970’s and 1980’s. But her most loved job was Nanny to so many. She welcomed her grandchildren into her care and as they grew, she continued that job to her “bonus” babies.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, Steve E. Adkins (Patricia) and Scott A. Adkins (Shannon); one daughter, Jeri Lynn Long (Michael) and two stepsons; Roger Keith (Brenda) and Michael Barry (Bud); one stepdaughter, Margaret Diane Fields (Terry); 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 sister-in-law, Doris Richardson. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her along with four of her most loved bonus “babies” Reagan Shourds Schlichting, Kendall Shourds, Ben Butler and Maddie Butler. The legacy she leaves behind tells the story of a life well loved!
We know she was met by many loved ones waiting to show her around those streets of gold, but rest assured we also know, when the newness wears off there will be a few extra thunder and lightning moments sent to us just to let us all know she is still watching our every move!
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Noon, at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven & Resthaven Memorial Park in the chapel, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218, with her nephew, Brother Timothy Underhill officiating. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park.
Visitation is Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 2 p.m until 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
