

Dorothy Johnson-Ware departed this life at home on September 30, 2026. Born on August 4, 1938, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Dorothy was the cherished daughter of Reverend Ivan J. and Myriel Lean Johnson, who predeceased her, along with her husband, Lewis Franklin Ware, and siblings Erma Dean Tyler, Ivanetta Johnson, and Benjamin Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her niece Dannette Cabbell and great nephew Bradley Cabbell.
Dorothy's life was educated in her hometown, she graduated from Langston High School and pursued her passion for beauty by attending cosmetology school, both in Hot Springs and later in Louisville, Kentucky, where she moved with her husband, Lewis, whom she married on October 18, 1960.
In Louisville, Dorothy became a beloved beautician. She also served the community through her work in the Kentucky foster care system. Dorothy was a trailblazer, being the first Black woman to work as a Mutual Teller at Churchill Downs, Keenland, and Turfway Park Race Course. She was also a captain in the Millionaire Room at Churchill Downs.
Dorothy was deeply rooted in her faith and community. As an active member of Greater Salem Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky for over 55 years, she attended Sunday school, prayer meetings, bible study, and was a dedicated participant in the women's ministry. Her compassion extended beyond the church walls as she visited the sick in hospitals and nursing homes, offering solace and prayers.
After a long illness in Louisville, Dorothy moved to Springfield, Illinois in November 2017 to be more comfortable and closer to her family.
An avid news watcher and devoted student of the Bible, Dorothy's well-used bible was a reflection of her deep faith and commitment to learning. Her generous and free-hearted spirit touched many lives.
Dorothy is survived by her sisters, Ola Marie Leddell and Victoria Johnson. Her nephews, Terry Tyler, Daniel Cabbell, Kenric Buchanan, and Courtney Leddell, along with nieces Rochelle Garcia, April Leddell-Hughes, Denell Johnson, Tiffany Johnson, Christian Johnson, and Talia Johnson. As well as nine great nieces and nine great nephews, five great great nephews and two great great nieces, and one great great great niece. And a host of cousins and friends who will all forever remember her warmth and generosity.
Funeral services will be held in Springfield, IL, care of Ruby Funeral Services & Crematories. Dorothy will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.
