Dorothy Fowle Cornett Tayse, 89, of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Louisville, passed away on March 16, 2011 at her home. She was a native of Louisville, KY, and at an early age she had enrolled in the Louisville branch of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. During her preteen years she entered the University of Louisville music program. Her love of music came from her parents, both accomplished musicians, who played the drums and piano for the silent movies.
At the end of her sophomore year of school she went to work as an Air Force Inspector for the Curtiss Wright plant in Louisville where she remained until the end of WWII. During this time she had married her first husband, Leonard Cornett. After two years of marriage, Leonard was inducted into the Army during the war, where he was killed in France the following year. After the war, she enrolled in the Comptometer School (the computer of its day). She later taught technology at night and worked for the IRS during the day. After that, she went to work for Remington Rand and made moves to Boston and New York, and later worked for the L & N Rail Road for many years. It was during this time that she met and married her second husband, William Tayse, who was the photographer for the L & N.
She was an accomplished organist and held the position of organist/choir director at Edenside Christian Church, and the Disciples of Christ Church in Louisville, where she remained in that post until her move to Jacksonville. She stayed active in church work with the choir and did substitute organ work at numerous churches in Jacksonville, including a long and loving relationship with the First Church of Christ, Scientist. She also became a member and was very active in the Friday Musicale, serving on the board as both secretary and Chaplain.
Preceding her in death were her parents, both husbands, a brother and a nephew.
Left to cherish her memory are her niece, Diane (Tom) Denny of Arizona, step-children, Jeffrey Tayse of FL, Steven (Beverly) Tayse and Valerie Tayse (Dave) Videtto both of Louisville; and numerous great-nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren, all who will miss her greatly.
Her Celebration of Life - Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at noon, at the Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Chapel, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218. Visitation will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.
