After TT Scrambles, I was racing flat track. In both events, we built our own bikes, factory bikes for those either just didn’t exist in those early days, or they were way too expensive for my budget. Eddie morphed out of go karts in to Sports Cars events, with a Corvette.  But he was always driving #3.
	I hope you, as the reader here, have enjoyed the reading of this reminiscence, a fraction as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I am right now about three and a half months from 77th birthday. I am in good health, have heart problems, but it is under control by the handful of meds I take every morning and night. I’m the last of the family I was born into and grew up in. It had never crossed my mind I’d be such. My wife of 40 years, 2 months and 2 days, past in August, 2021. It’s getting quite lonely in these latter years. I have 2 of my 3 children left with me. My youngest daughter past, August, 2018, horrible accident. She left me a son-in-law and 3 beautiful grandkids. Plus the 4 grandblessings my son and his wife have brought me. At the bottom of the hill, we’d take a street over to Brownsboro Rd, then back up to where we were supposed to be! Down Sunset Hill, we were way out of boundaries! But, damn, it was fun! Back up on Frankfort, where the railroad tracks crossover, we’d check to see if the gates were open into the lumberyard (that use to be there), so we could put a couple of pennys on the track, and have the switch engine crush them into super flat copper ovals as they ran those flat cars of lumber in for unloading! They did that a lot on Saturdays. Then, it’d be back to Aunt Libby’s house (Eddie’s Mom) for Peanut Butter and Hersey Bar sandwiches, Lay’s Potato Chips (don’t put’em on no plate, grab’em by the handful right outta the bag) and a big glass of milk! Of course, in the living room, in front of the TV. Eddie’s fav lunch, he brought that sandwich into my life, immediately became my fav as well! Still is!  My folks moved to Texas, to Houston, summer of 1957, I had my 11th birthday right after we got there.  My Dad was in construction, seemed construction had a major lull in the middle ‘50’s in Louisville. Work had been scarce for a while. My oldest sister and her husband had moved to Houston a couple of years before, seemed work was plentiful there, Dad finally made the decision and away we went. Each summer we made our vacation pilgrimage to Louisville, to visit family. During that week I’d get to visit with Eddie, most enjoyable! While we were still preteens, it would be as I’ve described above.  Later, as we matured, teenagers, then young adults, life kinda took us over, we had less time for such things. It may be a decade before we would get together, but anyone looking on, they’d of swore we’d just visited a few days before.  Eddie and I kinda vibrated to the same frequency, if you know what I mean.  When he was racing go karts, I was riding motorcycles, in pre-motocross events called Time Trial Scrambles, or TT Scrambles as we called them.  contin

Eddie is 11 months, one week old than I am. As we were growing up, we were able to spend time together, usually on the weekends. My family, Eddie’s Mom is my Dad’s younger sister, we lived in the West End of Louisville. Couple times a month, as I was going up, My Dad & Mom would load is all up, I have 3 sisters and a brother, to uptown to visit my Grandmother, Dad’s Mom. Her house was on Pope St., just off Frankfort Ave. After a reasonable visit, I could get my Mom to take over to Eddie’s folks house on Coral Ave, about four blocks down Frankfort. Once there, I was in a whole ‘nother world.  Eddie and I would load up on a couple of bikes and head out, just to ride around, see what was going on. Down Coral St to Bingham Park, see what kids were there and what they were doing. Eddie always knew the kids that were playing there.  We’d chat a bit, then ride on.  Eddie wasn’t one to sit still for long, wheels were meant for rollin’!  From the park, it was easier to go across to Bellaire Ave, back up to Frankfort, then on down Frankfort for our ‘speed run’ down Sunset Hill!  Eddie was usually the first to the bottom, he’s most of a year older and a little bigger.  Once in a while I could best him, but gravity was his friend back in the day!   . . . continued in the next one . . .


This is from Ray Egerton, nephew of Edgar Forrest Powell, Sr., cousin of Edgar Forrest Powell, Jr., though as we were growing up, the adults around us, referred to Ed (as he preferred to be called as an adult) as, 'Eddie Boy.' 
I've always called him Eddie.  He corrected me once, some years ago, we were both adults, with kids and all. We were visiting with some guys at a car paint shop, in Louisville, I called him by 'Eddie', once we got in the to leave, he looked at me and said, "I prefer to be called Ed." I responded, "OK. But I've always called you Eddie." Looking out the windshield, driving, he just nodded, one time, kinda signaling, 'OK'. That's the way I took it.
