Harris, Eleanor Gardner, 88, entered the arms of her Heavenly Father on August 7, 2014, at Norton Audubon Hospital where family and friends were able to express their love and respect before her passing. Eleanor was born October 18, 1925, to William Walter and Lula Masters Gardner. She graduated from Fairdale High School as valedictorian of the class of 1942. Upon graduation she served as head bookkeeper for Byerly Motors before taking employment at an aviation plant in Louisville during the war years. She met Lloyd W. Harris, Sr., a G. I. from Stab, Kentucky, in 1943. They were married on January 2, 1945, a marriage of 59 wonderful years, until Mr. Harris’ death in 2004.
Once her children were of school age, Ellie went back to work as a secretary at Greenwood Elementary School. This was followed by cashier jobs at the P.I Burks Company and Kmart. She was a customer favorite at Kmart for the way she carefully folded each item before bagging it. Ellie took great pride in doing things right and lived her life accordingly.
She is survived by two sons, Lloyd (Kathie) and Ronald (Jane); two grandsons, Scott (April) and Tony (Deshia); eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Garr Oakes, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eleanor was a member of Calvary Holiness Church of Brooks, Kentucky. Her family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Pastor Doug Webb, and the many members of the church who gave such loving support to Ellie after she became housebound and could not attend services. We also appreciate her neighbors who were always there to assist her in times of need. She was very blessed in that regard. God bless you all.
Visitation will be from 10am to 12pm Monday August 11 at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd., Louisville. A celebration of Eleanor’s life will take place immediately following visitation. Burial will be private
