Eugene Mayes was born on March 4,1937 to the late Tom Mayes and Maggie Hodge-Mcin-tyre Mayes in Birmingham, Alabama. The Lord came to take his hand and lead him to his heavenly home on June 24, 2020 at 12:30 p.m. in Louisville, KY. Eugene had ten brothers and one sister.
Eugene accepted the Lord and savior at an early age in life. Along his journey in life he met Edith Mayes and married on Janaury 30, 1964. Eugene and Edith had two daughters, Regina Merritt and Patricia Snanden.
Eugene at the age of sixteen was enlisted to the US Army 101 1st Airborne Division, where he honorably served 11 years. Eugene believed in hardwork and dedication; after serving in the US army he worked 35 years at with Ford Motor Company at KTP.
Eugene was a dedicated member and served as a active deacon at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Anyone that knew Eugene loved to see his smile and be around his loving spirit. He served as a faithful servant on the brotherhood and performed with various brotherhood music groups. He would want us to continue to love and follow God. In his words, "Remember me but let me go, for God has prepared a place for me in Heaven, I 'am home!"
Eugene Mayes is survived by his daughters, Regina Merritt (Ronnie), Patricia Snanden (Barry) late husband; grandchildren, Reshia Mayes, Roneshia Merritt, Maressa Shelton and Daron Craft; sister, Nellie Bethel (Vince); brothers, Charles Mayes (Stella), Clifford Mayes (Vonceia) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2020 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven (4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218), with a service to honor the life of Eugene to follow at 12 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
