Gary Ray Conway, a visionary software engineer and a cherished member of the Louisville community, passed away in his home on July 4, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on September 9, 1951, in Louisville, Kentucky. Gary's life was marked by his exceptional skills, ingenuity, and the deep connections he forged with those around him.
Having attended University of Louisville's Speed School, Gary's academic foundation paved the way for a career filled with significant achievements. He served honorably in the Indiana National Guard, where his technical skills and leadership were greatly valued. Gary's professional life was distinguished by his role as a co-inventor of zip files, which revolutionized data storage. He was also the proud owner of Conway Builders Supply and created the famed home-built "Hard Times."
Gary's personal life was equally remarkable. As a single father, he skillfully balanced the responsibilities of parenting with his professional and military commitments. He is remembered for his ability as a real “do it all” kind of handyman, whether it was building flight simulators or making emergency landings on highways, to designing and building his dream home, and his many projects. His charisma and humor through it all brought joy to many.
He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Conway, and his mother, Mildred Conway. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Polk Conway, his brother, Michael Conway, and his daughter, Taylor Conway.
Visitation will be held on July 15, 2024 from 3PM to 8 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home 4400 Bardstown Road Louisville, Kentucky 40218. Services will also be conducted on July 16 at 10 AM. Gary's life and legacy will be honored in a ceremony that reflects his impactful and memorable journey.
