

After serving the Marine Corps, he graduated from Georgetown College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was the pastor of the Baptist Churches of Augusta, Burkesville and Horse Cave, Kentucky. He held positions with the Kentucky Baptist Convention, including as Director of Cedarmore Baptist Assembly. He was a member of Parkland Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his son David, and grandson Bryan. He is survived by his loving wife Laverne Mitchell Barnes; son Wayne (Carolyn); stepchildren Garey Mitchell (Debbie) and Sandy Buttram (Mike); 7 grandchildren, Emily Walz (Paul), Zachary Barnes (Kayleah), Rebecca McRae (Cody), Lindsey Farmer (Aaron), Ashley Myers (Travis), Cassie Joiner (Shawn), and Chanda Smock (Paul); 13 great grandchildren, Kaden, Coulter, Jase, Kage, Aubrey, Emerson, Madison, Avery, Colton, Mila, Micah, Lila, and Emmy; and one brother, Ronald Lee Barnes; and 2 nieces, Rhonda and Barbara.
Visitation will be June 29, 2024 at Parkland Baptist Church, 7206 Shepherdsville Road beginning 10AM with memorial service at 12PM. Interment at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, Radcliff, Kentucky. Memorial gifts may be made to the Master Plan of Parkland Baptist Church or the Alzheimer's Association (act.alz.org).
