

She was preceded in death by her parents, H. Albert and Violet Alford Korfhage; sisters Violet Simpson (Douglas) and Louisa; brothers, Albert (Jeanette), Frank (Anna Frances), William, James, Paul (Betty), Harry, and Quentin; and nephews Phillip and Caryl.
She is survived by her sister Lillian May McCrea (Woodrow) of Alma, GA; sisters-in-law Doris and Glenna; nieces Mary and Sharon Bernardi (Greg) who cared for her, Janice Young, Louisa Simpson (David Fertig), and Nancy Gentry (Lindsey); nephews Albert “Bert” (Candy), H. Richard “Hank” Simpson (Victoria), Kelvin (Flo), David (Pam), James “Jamie” Simpson (Teresa), Sherrill Warren (Kathy), Paul (Andilyn), Mark (Megan), and J.D.; seventeen great nieces and nephews, sixteen great-great nieces and nephews, and two great-great-great nephews
Miss Korfhage attended Valley High School and the University of Louisville where she earned bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in biology and played in the marching band. She taught biology at Valley for more than 30 years during which she organized the Chess League in the public schools, started Valley’s Astronomy Club, and led her classes in an effort to transform the school grounds by planting tulips, shrubs, and trees native to Kentucky,.
She organized the STEP (Science Teachers Exchange Program) Workshop for teachers; received several summer scholarships from the National Science Foundation. She was a member of the National Teachers Association, National Association of Biology Teachers, the Kentucky Natural History Society, the Beckham Bird Club, and the Louisville Astronomical Association. She was named Outstanding Biology Teacher in Kentucky in 1969, Outstanding Science Educator in the State of Kentucky in 1974, and was nominated by Jefferson County for the teacher of the year award for Kentucky in 1978.
In retirement Miss Korfhage enjoyed gardening, gatherings with friends and family, attending the opera and ballet, and travel in Europe, China and Australia. She was a member of the Northfield Garden Club, the Louisville Area Daylily Society and the Kentucky Natural History Association.
Funeral service will be Saturday, December 6, 2014, at 2 pm at Arch L Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40222. Visitation 10 am - 2 pm. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to Hosparus of Louisville or the Harriet A. Korfhage Fund, University of Louisville, School of Music.
