Harry R. Weihe, Jr., 82, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, peacefully at his home. He was born in Louisville, KY on November 11, 1941, to Harry Russell Weihe, Sr. and Zella Sewell Weihe. He graduated from Saint Xavier High School in 1959 and then attended Bellarmine College. Harry retired from American Air Filter in 1997, where he worked for 36 years. One of his biggest enjoyments was working in his garage and doing woodworking projects which were often ideas dreamt up by a family member. He stayed home for a couple of years working in the garage until Nita decided it was time for him to go back to work! Then he went to work for Bee Line Courier Services for a few years before striking a deal with Derby Dental Labs delivering dental products.
He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, sister and all of his extended family and friends.
Harry loved baseball, college football, and horse racing. He was proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s involvement in sports, no matter the sport. He supported and encouraged them in everything they did including coaching them in baseball at Germantown Ball Park. He loved watching St. X football when his son Daniel played and Suzanne’s softball games at Assumption and with travel teams. He also attended many games for his children and grandchildren at Germantown, Fern Creek, Okolona, J-Town, Presentation, Assumption, St. X, and gyms across the city. All the children and grandchildren knew Dad/Papaw Harry was their biggest fan. He was proud and supportive of all of their accomplishments and successes.
He especially loved attending the Louisville Redbirds and then the Louisville Bats games. He will always be remembered for the time at the Bats game when he got into an argument from the stands with a pitcher that was being pulled out of the game. He did not think the guy could pitch so Harry was “booing” him because the pitcher was not taking Harry’s advice to “throw it in the dirt”! Harry was a University of Louisville Football Cardinals season ticket holder for many years. Memories at U of L game tailgates are too numerous to mention and he was definitely missed when he no longer could attend.
The love of horseracing and the Kentucky Derby were always a part of Harry’s life. He loved to tell stories of his Uncle Harry working at the track as a farrier and Derby parties at the Weihe house are legendary! He may have placed a bet or two on Derby day over the years and more often than not, he “broke even”, as he would say, not tipping his hand either way. One of Daniel’s fondest memories at a very young age was going to Louisville Downs with Dad watching harness racing while mom was having Bunco. Up until April 3rd Harry continued to bet on the horses even if it was only in his mind.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Russell Weihe, Sr. and Zella Sewell Weihe; Uncle and Aunt: Harry and Elizabeth Klemenz; Sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Margaret and Tony Schneidtmiller, Mary Lee and Paul Schweitzer, Edna and Ken Just, Betty and Corky Krider, Carolyn and Al Fautz, Sonny Vissing, Herb Hartman and Ernie Wilkerson.
