

Helen Marcella Freeman, age 101, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026. Born on September 26, 1924, to Charles Ray Ort Sr. and Irma Belle Kebsch, Helen lived a remarkable life defined by faith, service, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her family.
Following the death of her mother, Helen spent the years 1932 through 1936 at St. Joseph Children’s Home. Though she experienced profound loss at a young age, those early hardships shaped the strength, independence, and compassion that became the hallmarks of her extraordinary life.
A proud United States Navy veteran, Helen honorably served her country during World War II. After her military service, she dedicated 27 years to the American Printing House for the Blind, retiring in 1989.
Following her retirement, Helen moved to Blairwood Apartments, where she lived for 23 years and formed many cherished friendships. Her time there was filled with companionship, laughter, and the deep bonds she created with neighbors who became like family.
Helen was also a longtime and faithful member of St. Francis of Rome Parish, where her quiet devotion and steadfast spirit were deeply felt.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Ray Ort Sr. and Irma Belle Keusch; her brothers, Charles Ray Ort (Mariana) and Marvin Lee Ort (Mary Lou); her nephews, Stephen Ort and Michael Ort; and her great-niece, Laura Ort.
She is lovingly survived by her children: Patricia Shaughnessy (Dennis), Bill Freeman (Marilyn), and Theresa Green (David).
Helen was a proud and devoted grandmother to Carrie (Gary), Eric (Amy), Alicia (Mark), Tammy (Rory), and Ashley. She was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Sydney, Caelon, Everly, and Paisley. In addition, she leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Known for her independence, resilience, and selfless spirit, Helen consistently placed the needs of others before her own. She was a source of strength, encouragement, and unconditional love to everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was also an avid sports fan who delighted in cheering on her favorite teams and sharing her enthusiasm with family and friends.
Helen’s extraordinary life was one of quiet strength, faithful service, and enduring love. Her legacy of compassion, generosity, and steadfast dedication to her family will continue to inspire all those whose lives she touched.
She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Funeral service will be Thursday, July 9, 2026 at 1pm at Evergreen Funeral Home with entombment in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 8, 2026 from 1pm-8pm at Evergreen Funeral Home.
