Hilary Porter Harned

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandra (Ridge) Harned, and children Raymond (Daphne) and Jennifer; grandchildren, Derek, Antoine, Joe, and Chontelle; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a niece, several nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents (Ben and Edith Harned), sister (Rita), and brothers (Enoch and Virgil).

Hilary graduated from Westport High School, Class of ‘65. He then served in the US Air Force for six years, after which he entered the workforce doing the jobs he loved the most: sales and serving voluntarily on two suburban Louisville police departments (Forest Hills and Woodlawn Park). His sales position with American Sterilizer Co. took him and his family to the Syracuse, NY, area, where they lived for 33 years, making lifelong friends, before returning to his beloved Louisville.

Hil enjoyed boating, motorcycling, traveling all over the world, hanging out with his pets, and a good sip of Kentucky bourbon. He was a member of the NY Guard and became the Commander of the VFW Post 7290 in N. Syracuse, and later, the commander of the American Legion Post 787 in Cicero. After moving back to Kentucky, he continued his involvement in military organizations, becoming the Commander of Zachary Taylor American Legion Post 180 in St. Matthews where he served for 13 years, working diligently up until his passing and enjoying the camaraderie of the wonderful friends he made there.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 4 to 7 PM, at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky, 40218.

A celebration of life will be held at the Zachary Taylor American Legion Post 180 at a later date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 180 in Louisville or the Kentucky Humane Society.
