Jack was one of the men I admired while being associated with him in Troop 73 of the Boy Scouts at Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church. He apparently had been in the Scouts there prior to his entry into the U.S. Coast Guard. He rejoined upon his Discharge from the Coast Guard.  I didn't realize he was ten years older than most of my fellow Troopers. He was committed to instilling in all of us the Scout Code of Ethics, I believe he returned in about 1953 and may have been an assistant Scout Master when I received my Eagle Scout Award. At about the same time our group split off and was organized as Explorer Post 73 under his leadership. He organized a spelunking expedition to Indiana and a canoe trip up the Salt river using canoes obtained from the American Red Cross. We spent the night at a fishing cabin my Dad rented on an annual basis. Jack had brought some Vienna Sausages and suffered an upset stomach after eating them. The next day we paddled and drug the canoes up Floyds Fork for our return to Louisville. Sometime later Jack and Angie thought we boys needed an introduction to the dating scene. They prepared plans for a picnic at the Ohio River Falls on the Indiana shore. Each of us had to acquire a date, prepare a picnic basket and enmasse' we rode a city bus across the Clark Bridge (no Kennedy then)  and proceeded to the picnic area. I think everyone had a great time, so much so, that the Explorer Post came to a screeching halt soon afterward. School, paper routes, driver licenses, and cars all entered into this decision. While attending U of L's Speed Engineering School I would see Jack. He was working as a Piping Designer for a large Plumbing Construction  Company    near 7th and Hill St. He had bought a GM auto that Ralph Nader soon wrote a book about named "Unsafe at any Speed". He and Angie also had bought a house off Herr Lane and he was impressed with the teachers (most came from the Chance School recently closed)  at the elementary school Jennifer and Kevin would be attending. We studied together a few times at their home. More years pass and I find my daughter Karen is dating Kevin, this finally culminates in a new Granddaughter. She goes by the name Danielle McClarty. I enjoyed hearing him speak of flying in the PBY's during patrol duty in the Coast Guard. Growing up poor in the south end and the cold wind whistling through his parents and Grandparents homes. We speculated about his and my Native American ancestors. Danielle certainly displays some of these characteristics. Overall I found Jack to be inquisitive about many things and we'll have to have more discussions if we ever meet in the future. I hope this allows an expanded view of Jack that his later friends never had a chance to see.

We were so sorry to see that your Dad passed away.  Our families use to get together many, many years ago when we were visiting in the Louisville area.
