James "Andy" Cletus Anderson

James Cletus "Andy" Anderson 83 of Louisville passed away on April 29, 2026.He was born on February 12, 1943, in Pig, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents James W. Anderson and Louise McCombs Anderson, sister Madge Anderson, and nephew Brian Beyer. He is survived by his wife Carol Crawford Anderson, son Charles Edward "Ned" Anderson (Heather Bauer), stepdaughter Susan Babchick (David White), sister Patty Lynn, nephew Tony Beyer, niece Donna Jurgens (Tony), niece Jenny Ellis (Larry), grandnieces Erica Warren (Josh), Amber Beyer, and Alex Jurgens, and grandnephew Nicholas Jurgens (Monica).

He met his beloved wife Carol on the “best bike ride” he ever took, organized by the Louisville Wheelmen. He was an accomplished rider, logging countless miles on the back roads of Kentucky and southern Indiana. Andy & Carol were married in May of 1978, and were blessed with a son, Charles “Ned” Anderson four years later in May of 1982. The family enjoyed many bikes rides together and alone over the years, making many friends along the way.

Andy was a lifelong, passionate advocate of both photography and Louisville history. These passions met in his 35 year tenure as Curator of the UofL Photographic Archives. There he worked tirelessly on acquiring, cataloging, and digitizing works from some of the greatest artistic and documentary photographers of our times. He wrote several books featuring the histories and photographs of Louisville, as well as entries on photography for online encyclopedias. He enjoyed giving countless lectures on these subjects over the years.

Andy was an amazing brother, husband, father, and friend who always had a kind word and a friendly ear for anyone he encountered.

One of Andy’s favorite places to visit and take photographs was Cave Hill Cemetery. He will have a memorial placed in the Scattering Garden there, where his name can live in perpetuity among the flora and fauna of the changing seasons that he loved so much. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
