Jim was born on November 26, 1932 in Louisville, Kentucky to parents’ Robert & Pearlie Murray. Jim served his nation in the United States Army, enlisting on 12 – March 1953. Jim was a Tech Sergeant with the 264th T. Company (TS) at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. He served in Alaska at Ft. Whittier and then Fort Eustis in Virginia. During his tenure with the United States Army, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He became a Stevedore, one who was tasked with loading and unloading cargo from ships and other means of transportation as well as attended Transportation School. He was honorably discharged on 11 – March 1955, transferring to the United States Army Reserves in the Kentucky Military District. Jim Murray married his sweetheart, Elsie Rouse, on May 26, 1956 at the Harmony Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Jim was a retired Agent with Allstate, as well as a former employee of the Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums. He & his wife, Elsie, spent 23 years in prison ministry. Jim was a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ, traveling throughout Kentucky and other states like Mississippi, spreading the word of God. They travelled to Roederer Correctional Complex, Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, as well as Kentucky State Reformatory to name a few. He taught Sunday school for many years, and loved children. He was very active in Sunday school and church events. Jim & Elsie traveled where they felt led by God to go, spreading the Gospel. Jim lived a full life, a life well lived.
His parents, Robert & Pearlie Murray; brother & sisters, Lucille Schuler, Christine Herron, Bill Murray & Helen Underwood precede Jim in his passing.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Elsie Murray; sister, Shirley (Floyd) Anthony; many nieces & nephews; plus, a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dignity Chapel of the Evergreen Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in the Normandy Chapel of the Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 also at the Evergreen Funeral Home.
