OBITUARY

John J. Lawrence Sr.

December 21, 1944January 3, 2013

John Lawrence, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2013, in the company of his family, after a short battle with colon cancer. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 21, 1944 and lived in California until 1988 when he relocated his family to Louisville, Kentucky—which he had since considered his home town. John served in the U.S. Air Force and later in the National Guard and Air Force Reserve. His career in law enforcement spanned nearly 30 years, first as a police officer in Sacramento, California, then as a Border Patrol Agent and finally a Special Agent with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. After retirement, he started a second career as a Spanish teacher and teacher’s assistant at Coleridge-Taylor Montessori School, where he had an enormous impact on both students and teachers alike. John was an avid square dancer for many years and was a member of the Kentuckiana Square Dance Association (KSDA), where he served as President from 2005-06, chaired many Association dances and events, and was most recently a member of the SAN-TA Rounds club. John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sherri; son John Lawrence, Jr. (Krista) of Hudsonville, Michigan; daughter Jennifer Young and son Jim Lawrence, both of Louisville. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren—all of whom brought him great joy. We invite anyone who knew John to the visitation and memorial service in celebration of his life. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday January10, 2013 at 2 pm at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Sherri, I worked with John occasionally at Wilder Elementary in the past several years and was so sorry to hear of his passing. He was such a kind hearted man and often talked of the trips you would take searching out good food. He so loved his family and never had anything to say that wasn't loving about all of you! I was lucky enough to have a nice long conversation with him back in October and he had such a positive attitude about life. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with you as you go through the days ahead.

My deepest sympathy on your loss. I enjoyed working with "Mr. John" in my kindergarten class at Stopher. He was so cute with the children. The busier he was in the classroom the happier he was. He was always patient and friendly with the children and adults. It was always fun to hear about his yard sale finds, travels and life experiences. He loved each of you dearly and was so proud of the grandchildren. He touched many. I will keep you in thought and prayer. May your happy memories uplift you during this difficult time.

SHERRY AND FAMILY
I WAS SADDENED TO HEAR OF JOHNS PASSING. ALTHOUGH I NEVER HEARD FROM HIM PERSONNALLY SINCE HE LEFT STOCKTON FOR LOUISVILLE I SOMETIMES HEARD ABOUT HIM FROM OTHERS WHO CROSSED PATHS WITH HIM. EVERYTHING SAID WAS GOOD!
"JOHN OF IMMIGRATION" WAS WHAT MANY AGENTS CALLED HIM WHILE IN STOCKTON. HE WAS AN EXCELLENT AGENT AND AN ASSET TO THE BORDER PATROL.

Sherri, I was deeply saddened by the news of John's passing. I have so many wonderful memories of both of you from my youth. I often tell the story when John Sr. was sitting at the dining room table eating jalapeno peppers from a jar and I asked him if they were hot. He told me to dip my finger in the juice and taste it. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I'm keeping you, John Jr, Jenny and Jimmy in my prayers.
