John Lawrence, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2013, in the company of his family, after a short battle with colon cancer. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on December 21, 1944 and lived in California until 1988 when he relocated his family to Louisville, Kentucky—which he had since considered his home town.
John served in the U.S. Air Force and later in the National Guard and Air Force Reserve. His career in law enforcement spanned nearly 30 years, first as a police officer in Sacramento, California, then as a Border Patrol Agent and finally a Special Agent with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. After retirement, he started a second career as a Spanish teacher and teacher’s assistant at Coleridge-Taylor Montessori School, where he had an enormous impact on both students and teachers alike.
John was an avid square dancer for many years and was a member of the Kentuckiana Square Dance Association (KSDA), where he served as President from 2005-06, chaired many Association dances and events, and was most recently a member of the SAN-TA Rounds club.
John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sherri; son John Lawrence, Jr. (Krista) of Hudsonville, Michigan; daughter Jennifer Young and son Jim Lawrence, both of Louisville. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren—all of whom brought him great joy.
We invite anyone who knew John to the visitation and memorial service in celebration of his life. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday January10, 2013 at 2 pm at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
