John Walter Seelye, 83, passed away on September 2, 2026. A member of the Sunrise Rotary Club, John lived a life marked by steady dedication and quiet strength. He worked at Stewart's Department store as a furrier from 1962 to 1976, later serving as a subcontractor for multiple locations before opening his own family business in 1984, “John Seelye and Son.” Known with love as “The Dr. of Fur,” he built his reputation through hard work, skill, and a sincere care for people that never needed to be announced to be felt.
John was a beloved presence—calm by nature, never one to fight about anything, and someone whose gentle humor could lighten a room without ever demanding attention. He loved watching westerns and was rarely seen without his brown cowboy hat. He was, in the words of his wife who knew him best, “the best husband anyone could ever ask for.”
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Nellie Seelye, as well as many beloved family members and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara Price Seelye; his sons, Steve Seelye (Tracie) and John Wesley Seelye (Amanda); his grandchildren, Madeline Seelye, David Seelye (Emily), Hunter Seelye, and Gwen Seelye; his great-grandchild, Cooper Seelye; his siblings, Dorlas Walls(John), Earl Seelye (Rita), and Dale Seelye (Vicki); his fur baby, Lily Seelye; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway, Louisville, KY 40213, on September 6, 2026, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. A Funeral Service will follow at Evergreen Funeral Home on September 6, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
