Joseph A. Burt Sr., 95, of Louisville, KY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, with family by his side. Joseph was proceeded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jean Burt, brother, James Burt Jr., son, Joseph Burt Jr. and great grandson, Brantley Burt.
To his grandkids, he was superman. Joe played on the undefeated Talladega High School football team and won three state championships. He ran track at Auburn University; even breaking a world record in the 440. He broke physical fitness records in the US Army, including doing over 100 pull ups. He drove tanks and was a tank commander. He was promoted on his first day stationed at Fort Knox for getting into a new battle tank with “Secret” technology; one of the first tanks with an automatic transmission. These accomplishments would continue into his professional life after the military.
As a long time member of Audubon Country Club, he loved to golf. He made five hole-in-ones during his golfing life. He would famously quip, “Sayonara” when one of his grandsons hit an errant tee shot. Joe and Jean were avid ballroom dancers that rarely missed an opportunity to dance. He traveled to over 30 countries, most of which during his distinguished career of nearly 60 years with New York Life Insurance Company. With the help of his secretary of 40 years, Ann Vest, he dedicated his professional life to to helping people prepare for their future and protect their families, even becoming the largest writer of pension plans in the company. Joe was a lifetime Council and MDRT member. Joe was truly an extraordinary man, often reminding his grandchildren, “Grandpa loves you.” He touched the lives of so many and will be sorely missed!
Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Elaine Burt Stratton, William Burt, Walter Burt, Gilbert Burt; children, Elizabeth Budde, Timothy Burt (Kathryn), Susan Burt; step-daughter, Patricia McGuffey (Buddy); grandchildren, Michael Frankrone (Alisha), Tiffany Rockwell (Chris), Matthew Frankrone (Anita), Jacob Frankrone, Nicholas Burt, Christopher Burt (Megan), Nathaniel Burt (Katie), Amber Cress (Joseph), Montana Burt (Mallory), Emily Breeden (Geoff), Daniel Roberts, Joseph Roberts (Beth), Lily Roberts, Hannah Leichter (Bradley), Isabelle Roberts, Faith Roberts, Annabeth Roberts, Jonah Roberts, Micah Roberts, Harmony Burt, Alana Burt; great grandchildren, Tyler Frankrone, Briannah Elgin, Camron Frankrone, Sophia Frankrone, Ethan Franklin, Olivia Rockwell, Levi Rockwell, Maren Frankrone, Violet Burt, Embrie Troupe, Rosie Burt, Penelope Burt, Zeta Burt, Bennett Burt, Ella Cress, Addison Cress, McKenna Burt, Ada Breeden, Rebekah Breeden, Paul Breeden, Silas Breeden, Hermione Roberts, Teddy Roberts.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dignity Chapel of the Evergreen Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the Chapel of the Apostles of the Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until the Funeral Hour of 2:00 p.m. also at the Evergreen Funeral Home.
