Joseph Arthur Schmidt Sr.

Joseph A. “Joe” Schmidt Sr., 96, passed away peacefully with family by his side, Friday December 11, 2015. He was born July 21, 1919 in Louisville to the late Joseph H. and Irene Meyer Schmidt. He was a Marine Rifle Sharpshooter and retired from the Naval Ordnance Plant. Joe enjoyed bowling, horse shoes and was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. Most importantly he was a loving father, grandfather and great- grand father and will be missed by many.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Schmidt, son, Joseph A. Schmidt Jr., great grandson, Peter Gifford, and a brother, Edward Lee Schmidt.

Left to cherish his memory is his children, Henry R. Schmidt (Eileen), Marilyn J. Newman (George) and Connie Sue Thomason (Rodney), daughter in law, Mary Jo Schmidt, 11 grandchildren: David, Diana, Dennis, Douglas, Mary Rita, Kathy, Russell, Kimberly, Keith, Christen and Brittney, 24 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren and longtime companion and friend, Suevella Richardson.

A celebration of life funeral mass will be held Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 11am at St. Bernard Church, with interment to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Friday from 2-8 pm at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road.
