Judith Harris Millar, 82, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 25th, 2022 after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s. Judy was born October 5, 1939 in Charleston, WV to the late WWII veteran, William Layton Harris and Virginia Georgianna Rockell Scott. She spent most of her upbringing in Kanawha City, WV and is preceded in death by her only sister, Jane Buskirk, niece Claudia Buskirk, son-in-law Chris Freeouf, and grandson Horace Kell.
Judy’s first marriage to Charles “Toby” King produced six children, who will be cherishing her memory from the six different states they reside. Laura King of Springfield, NJ, Susan (Mike) Nelson of Windsor, CA, Martha Freeouf of Asheville, NC, Barrie (Lara) King of Cincinnati, OH, Sarah King (John Golding) of Louisville, KY, and Andy King(Mandy) of Anchorage, AK. She adored her eleven grandchildren; Alex Nelson, Sam Nelson, Abigail Pippen, Jesse Freeouf, Emmitt King, Nathaniel “Nate” King, Owen Kell, Oliver Kell, Warren King, and Hazel King. She was a beloved Aunt to Mike, Pete, and Russ Buskirk along with many other nephews and nieces by marriage. Judy also had many close friendships within her communities throughout her life.
Retirement followed Judy’s marriage to Jim Millar, and together they enjoyed years of world travel, gardening, grandchildren, and a life firmly rooted in their church communities.
Judy was a proud graduate of WVU and obtained a degree in Clothing and Textiles with a minor in Art. This led to a career in education and as a leading creative force in the communities she lived. As a true fiber artist, she was an expert knitter, seamstress, and quilter. Her gorgeous sweaters, quilts and creations continue to bring joy and comfort to her loved ones. For many years, she served as the library assistant at Beechwood School, in Ft. Mitchell, Ky. She was known as “Ms King” to hundreds of students who regularly visited her desk for a chat, a gold star, a piece of cinnamon candy, or just a dose of her loving encouragement.
Judy served her communities in unique ways including, but not limited to, sewing dresses and jumpers for Haitian children, knitting chemo caps for local hospitals, and serving as the President of Easterseals. Judy’s business cards addressed her as the “Bag Lady” due to her passion for making, selling and gifting quilted purses. While Judy’s accomplishments were many, it was the simple pleasures that brought her the greatest joy. Picking wildflowers for tiny bouquets, listening to birds, a walk in the woods, digging in the dirt, cheering on the Mountaineers, a catchy tune, time with family… all part of a perfect day for Judy. To know Judy was to be met with a genuine smile, easy laugh and maybe even a dance. We are grateful that her positivity and kindness prevailed even under the weight of Alzheimer's.
