June Herman, 90, died peacefully in her sleep after a long illness on Thursday, December 21, 2023. Born and raised in Wesleyville, Penn., she spent most of her life in Ellettsville and Bloomington, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky, before moving to Indianapolis to enjoy her final years close to her daughter, Robin Herman, and Robin’s wife, Lisa Hall.
Mrs. Herman enjoyed a long life chiefly characterized by love for family, pleasure in adventure and travel, an affection for animals, compassion for anyone suffering, and a quick, easy laugh. Her life was not without adversity, but rather than be downcast by them, she used her occasional hardships to deepen her sympathy for others. She was generous. She was kind. She elicited love and friendship wherever she went. If one had no other friend, one could find one in Mrs. Herman.
Her family finds meaning in that Mrs. Herman died at the Winter Solstice, for the decline in her health had meant increasingly darkened days for her and for them. Now, with the end of Mrs. Herman’s suffering, they know she is enjoying the light of the Heaven in which she resolutely believed, and they can turn to celebrating Mrs. Herman’s life instead of mourning its approaching end.
Mrs. Herman is survived by her daughter, Robin Herman, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Hall (Indianapolis); a granddaughter, Kristy Kirk (Louisville); and two great grandchildren, Olivia and Jaley. She also was especially close with nephew Joseph Grove (Louisville), who joins others in the family from Texas to France in lamenting her passing. Her beloved dog, Henry, also is among those she leaves behind.
Mrs. Herman was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Herman; and son, Edwin “Ted” Herman.
Visitation is at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 30, with the funeral service at noon. Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Ky.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of love can be made to the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home in Indianapolis, care of Morning Light Inc.
