Born on May 27, 1954, in Louisville, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy Clotfelter. Karen lived her life with a servant’s heart and strong faith, qualities that shone brightly through in her love of family, friends, and community. She is survived by her devoted husband of 44 years, David S. Whitty; her sister, Brenda Simmons (John); and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews and friends.
Karen was known for her gracious hospitality and gift for bringing people together. She delighted in hosting dinners and gatherings, always setting the table with care and creating an atmosphere of warmth, laughter, and welcome. Her kindness and generosity touched everyone she met, and she was always willing to extend a hand to those in need.
Deeply committed to her community, Karen served as an original board member of the Discover Louisville Orchestra program, Kentucky Harvest, and Yew Dell Gardens. She played an instrumental role in shaping Cameron Mills Ministries and the NuluFest 2013, and most recently founded Yadda, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to supporting young musicians facing the challenges of life on the road. Though her work with Yadda was cut short by illness, her vision and passion inspired many.
Karen had a lifelong love of the beach, beginning with childhood trips to North Carolina and later to Sanibel Island, where she often welcomed friends to join her. In recent years, she and David spent winters at Cape San Blas, Florida, where she embraced the local music scene and developed lasting friendships.
Though she and David did not have children of their own, Karen was a mentor and encourager to countless young people, especially musicians, nieces and nephews, and young couples she guided with love and wisdom. To know her was to be welcomed as family, and many who crossed her path became cherished friends.
A celebration of Karen’s life will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at Arch Heady and Sons Funeral Home, 7410 Westport Road, Louisville, KY, 40222. Visitation will be from 3p-6p, immediately followed by a memorial service at the same location. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to ChooseWell Communities, Inc., PO Box 2906, Louisville, KY 40201, www.choose-well.org, [email protected].
