Lawrence "Larry" Edward Brooks

Lawrence “Larry” Edward Brooks, 67, of West Monroe, Louisiana, went home to be with the Lord on July 27, 2026, after an extended illness at MD Anderson in Houston. Born on October 16, 1958, in Louisville, Kentucky, Larry lived his life anchored in faith and strengthened by family.

Throughout his illness, when healthcare workers asked if he had any concerns, Larry would simply smile and say he had none — because he was covered by the blood of Jesus Christ. He worshiped with the Jackson Street Church of Christ, and he remained deeply grateful for the love, prayers, and support they poured over him during his final year.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, David and Pauline Monroe Brooks; his paternal grandparents, Bennie and Annie Baker Brooks; his maternal grandparents, Hollis and Ofie Monroe; and two siblings, Prisilla Brooks and Ricky Brooks.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Sharon Brooks; his daughter, Autumn Clarke and her husband Stephen; his son, Lawrence “Bubby” Brooks; and his beloved grandsons — Hollis Clarke, Brady Clarke, Boston Brooks, and Kason Brooks — who joyfully called him “Pappy.” He also leaves behind his brother, Dave Brooks and wife Robin; his sisters, Debbie Wimsatt and husband Eddie, and Judy Harrison and husband Keith; his mothers-in-law, Annetta Cole and Joyce Phelps. In addition, Larry cherished 23 nieces and nephews, a multitude of great nieces and great nephews, and a large extended family whom he loved deeply and prayed for often.

Larry found joy in the simplest gifts God placed before him. After retiring from the oil industry and trucking, he welcomed each morning with scripture, quiet reflection, and a cup of coffee in his backyard — waiting with anticipation for the first burst of sunlight. Rain, cold, or discomfort never stopped him. Even this past winter, when his health made the outdoors difficult, he sat in his truck with the heater running so he wouldn’t miss a sunrise. After thanking God for another day, he waited for his “friends,” the squirrels, who entertained him with their acrobatic morning show.

Once the sun was up and the squirrels had finished their performance, Larry turned to the work that brought him pure joy — tending to his yard. He especially loved sharing this time with his grandsons. Anyone passing by could find Larry outside with whichever grandson was closest, teaching hack sawing techniques, arranging mowing and weed eating adventures, or explaining how many hours are in a day and how the sun moves across the sky.

Larry enjoyed worship services, hiking in the Smoky Mountains, cruising to new destinations, camping, fishing, sitting around firepits, watching fireworks with his family, talking sports and politics with his MIL, Annetta Cole, on Sunday afternoons and cheering on his grandsons and relatives at their sporting events.

Visitation for Larry will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway, Louisville, KY 40213, followed by a committal service at 1:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.
