Mae Louise Pray Wilson, 95, died peacefully at The Forum in Middletown, where she was an active resident for 14 years, on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 with her son Douglas Milton at her side. An outstanding educator in Jefferson County she served at Jeffersontown Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary, Mill Creek Elementary, and Crosby Middle School. Many of her students became influential citizens of Louisville and Jefferson County including Mayor Jerry Abramson. She also taught school in Ohio prior to moving to Louisville. During WW II she certified to work with the turret lathe and traveled Eastern Kentucky in the mountains for WPA. She was considered a pioneer as women were not involved in such activities in those days.
A charter member of St. Mark United Methodist Church she was quite active in church activities; she and her husband Elliott participated in several mission opportunities including Jamaica; she was an active participant of Sheffield Manor having been one of the founding group of the veteran’s coop. She was also an active member of WBCCI Kentucky Unit. Prior to Elliott’s death they spent their winters in Dade City FL where they were very active with fellow Airstreamers.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Durbin Elliott Wilson. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Elliott of Jacksonville, FL and Douglas Milton of Louisville; also four grandchildren, Stephen Michael Wilson, Michele Wilson Richardson, James Douglas Wilson, and Catherine Anne Wilson; and three great grandchildren Ian Michael Wilson, Tyler Mc Clain Wilson, and Matthew Braedon Wilson.
Celebrations of her life will be held at Arch L Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road with visitation from 2 – 8pm on Friday, July 27, 2012 and service at 10 am on Saturday, July 28, 2012. Interment will follow in Resthaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Mae Lou requested that contributions be made to Cedar Lake Lodge. We covet your prayers rejoicing with you in her life.
