Marion Louise (Smith) Puckett, 85, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017. Marion was born in Louisville to the late Louis and Mary (Parks) Smith. Also preceded in death by Josephine Demaree Parks, who was not only her grandmother but the one to raise her; husbands, Lyman Adrian Rodgers Jr. “Buddy” and Oscar Leon Puckett “Lee”. Marion's life was defined by a selfless and never-ending love that she lavished on everyone in her life, but the really good stuff was held in reserve for her four children. During hard times as a single mother she worked three jobs to provide for them, and when times were good her generosity of spirit and moral support was bottomless. There was nothing more important to her than family and the example she set was both inspiring and impossible to match, but we continue to try.
Marion worked for 39 years at the L&N and CSX railroads, rising from the secretarial pool to become the vice president's executive secretary and finally the company's benefits coordinator. She was widely known as the fastest typist and shorthand writer the railroad had ever seen, and left a legacy of caring and responsibility that continued with her active involvement post-retirement in the National Association of Railway Business Women.
Things Marion also loved: Dogs, margaritas on the rocks, Tom Jones, dogs, shopping for clothes, fried green tomatoes, dogs, Hugh Jackman, bourbon and branch (not necessarily in that order), dogs, southern fried chicken (hers was incomparable), Chris de Burgh's "The Lady In Red," and dogs. She made the world a better place and we miss her light, love and laughter.
Marion is survived by her children, John Michael Rodgers, Pamela Rodgers (Sam Page), Jeffrey Puckett, and Patrick Puckett; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her half-sisters, Viola Winkle and Mildred Winkle; and half-brother, Marshall Winkle.
A celebration of life is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 2:00pm at Arch L Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville Kentucky 40218 with an entombment to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00am until the time of the service.
